Introduction to service design training: for people from minority ethnic groups only

The Government Digital Service (GDS) user-centred design team regularly run service design training.

Service design is the design of services. A service is something that helps someone do a thing, like learn to drive.

We want to increase the diversity of the people who work in design across government. This month’s course is exclusively for people from minority ethnic groups (i.e. black, asian or another minority ethnic group) who are currently under-represented in the public sector design profession.

We’d like to give people insight into GDS, service design, and what it’s like to be a designer in government. There’s no prior knowledge or experience required. We want to reach people who work outside of the design or digital professions.

The course content is not in any way about belonging to or designing for minority ethnic groups, it is about Service design in government.

You can attend if you are interested in finding out about service design and you work in:

  • government

  • local government

  • the NHS

  • Parliament

The course is run by GDS at The White Chapel Building in London. It's free to attend. It will be facilitated by Clara Teoh, designer and design training lead at GDS and Amy Lee, service designer at the Department for Work and Pensions.

This course is not intended to turn you into a service designer, but it will give you a sample of what a service designer does and how they think.

This is our code of conduct for UCD community events.


Why you should take part
You work in the public sector and are interested in service design.

For example:

  • You work in policy, operations or delivery and are interested in finding out about service design

  • You are about to start working with a service designer for the first time

  • You have just started hearing the words ‘service design’ in your workplace

  • You are not a service designer but think you might be doing some service design work

  • You think you may like to become a service designer but you’d like to know more first

This course is not aimed at people who are already service designers. It's for permanent employees of the governmental departments, agencies and public bodies only (including civil servants, public servants, local government, people who work for Parliament, NHS and some third sector organisations), but not for contractors or suppliers to the government.


What you’ll learn
During the training, you’ll be introduced to a range of topics and skills.

  • What is a service?

  • What is service design?

  • What are the benefits of service design?

  • What does a service designer do?

  • How does a service designer work with other roles?

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand how a service designers’ focus differs from other members of the team

  • Use a service design tool appropriately by researching, finding and applying the right tool for a problem

  • Understand how a service designer would approach framing a problem

  • Use a journey map to analyse a service

The training contains some theory and lots of paper-based exercises and activities (individual, in pairs and in groups). You'll meet lots of people from many different roles and organisations in government. You do not need to prepare anything and slides will be provided.

On the day
Arrive before 9:45am ready for a 10am start and we'll finish at 5pm. Lunch will be at approximately 12:30 for approximately an hour and there will be a short break in the morning and afternoon. The training will be held in the 7th floor Garage, next to the kitchen.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are available for a £1 donation. Please bring a mug, lunch or lunch money and a scarf because the air-conditioning is tricky.

Please commit to the whole day. If you are unable to attend for the whole day, please let us know. We prefer not to have people leave early, start late or drop in and out of the day as it is unfair to the other group members and people on the waiting list.
