16/06/25 - 21/07/25 Monday Evenings from 6-9pm (NO CLASS ON THE 6TH OCTOBER)
Please note this is a new course for beginners or those who wish to refresh their sewing and dressmaking skills. Please bring your own sewing machine.
Our tutor is an experienced seamstress who qualified at RADA and has worked at a variety of international venues including London's West End. She has worked in theatre for mainstream productions like Les Miserable and acted as Wardrobe Supervisor for orchestras and choirs. Her experience includes tailoring, corsetry, millinery and pattern making. She owes her passion for sewing to her mum and Nana 'who taught me to sew as soon as I could be trusted not to break the sewing machine!'
This is a beginners course and suitable for those who have little or no experience of machine sewing. During this 6 week (18 hour) course, our experienced tutor will guide and support you through the basics of:
• Using your own sewing machine and the various functions; fabric and thread choices; needles and bobbins; tension and stitch size and different types of foot and when to use them
• Working with a basic pattern to make a garment including: choosing the right fabric, pinning the pattern to cut, making notches for pattern matching
• Basic techniques such as type of seam, hemming, straight line sewing and troubleshooting
• Other techniques such as inserting darts, zips or gathering may also be covered
The group will all use the same pattern ‘Simplicity 4552’ which offers a range of garment choices, which you will need to purchase, however fabric options will be discussed in the first lesson, so it is not advisable to purchase your fabric until this lesson has taken place.
NUMBER OF PLACES LIMITED TO 6 so early booking is recommended
