About this event

Join Jem Arrowsmith to knit 5 mini shawls and explore their shaping and construction.

Why Knit Shawls?

Thanks to the abundance of patterns available and the endless possibilities of yarns and colours to choose from, shawls are the perfect fashion accessory for the modern day knitter. A hand knitted shawl can be reached for on every occasion - throw it over a summer dress for a stroll along the beach, team with a plain t-shirt and jeans as a statement accessory, add some elegance to an evening date, or wear as a scarf and snuggle into it when the air takes a chill.

Shawls also make a great project to explore new techniques through stitch patterns, colourwork or adding beads! Many also make a lovely 'one skein' project, ideal for those individual skeins of colourful yarn that you may have picked up at a yarn shop or on holiday with no plan of what to make with it.

What Will I Learn?

During this class we will explore 5 different shawl shapes that are commonly used for shawl knitting, and knit mini-samples of these shapes. We will look at different increases that are used and how their placement creates the shape of the shawl. And we'll also talk about how to choose the best yarn and needles for your projects. From casting on, casting off and all the way to blocking your shawl, this class will give you everything you need to tackle your next shawl project with confidence!

The class will be taught using the English Style of knitting and is suitable for knitters who are comfortable with knit and purl stitches. The areas and techniques covered are:

  • How to choose yarns and needles that will work with your shawl pattern
  • Knitting mini shawls:
  1. Bottom Up Triangle Shawl
  2. Crescent Shaped Shawl and the Garter Tab cast on
  3. Semi-Circular Shawl
  4. Asymmetrical Shawl
  5. Top Down Triangle Shawl
  • Lace Bind-Off
  • How to block your shawl for a professional finish
  • Start your own shawl project

At the end of the class you will have 5 shawl patterns that you can start knitting straight away! You will also be given a document with all of the information covered in the class so you can refer back to it whenever you need to, AND you will also be given a voucher for an Under the Olive Tree Knits shawl pattern of your choice.

What Materials Do I Need?

For this class you will need a 6mm circular needle (60-80cm), a ball Double Knit Yarn and some stitch markers. Kits are available on request, please e-mail jem@undertheolivetreeknits.com to order.
