About this event

Please note that this class is conducted over 2 x 2 hour sessions:

Weds 10th November- 7-9pm

Thurs 11th November - 7-9pm

Why Knit Socks?

There is nothing more luxurious than slipping on a pair of soft, pretty, hand-knit socks. Especially when they have been made by your own fair hands!

As a knitting project they have many elements to keep you interested as well as sections that don't require much concentration, so they can be great for social or TV knitting. And as they are a small project you can pop them in your bag and knit them whenever opportunity strikes!

What Will I Learn?

To a beginner sock knitter it can look rather baffling - what's with all those pointy sticks, and how do you make a sock shape? In this class we walk through every step (if you'll pardon the pun) of sock knitting, from casting on to binding off, by knitting our own mini socks in a chunky yarn.

The class will be taught using the English Style of knitting and is suitable for knitters who are comfortable with knit and purl stitches. Don't worry if you have never used double pointed needles (dpns) or knitted in the round before. All techniques will be covered, and there will be support on hand throughout the class.

Over the two classes we will cover:

  • Sock shaping and the steps involved at each section
  • How to knit in the round on double pointed needles
  • Casting on stitches, dividing them over 3 double pointed needles and joining in the round
  • Working a 2x2 rib stitch in the round for the cuff
  • Knit the leg section
  • Separating the stitches onto 2 double pointed needles to work the heel flap in rows
  • Work short rows and watch the magic happen at the heel turn!
  • Pick up stitches along the side of the heel flap to create a gusset
  • Knit the foot section
  • Work some toe decreases
  • Use kitchener stitch to close the toe

You will be given a document with all of the information covered in the class for future reference.

At the end of the class you will also receive a full size adult sock pattern which uses all of the techniques used to knit the mini sock so that you can put your new skills into practice! The adult pattern also comes with links to video tutorials so you can easily refer to these if you need a refresher in the future.

And you will also be given a voucher for an Under the Olive Tree Knits sock pattern of your choice!

What Materials Do I Need?

For this class you will need a set of 4mm double pointed needles, a ball of Chunky or Aran weight yarn, a stitch marker and a tapestry needle. Kits are available on request, please e-mail jem@undertheolivetreeknits.com to order.

Here's what previous students had to say about this class:

"This class was really informative and helpful. There was plenty of time to knit the mini sock with no pressure and I really enjoyed the informal friendly atmosphere created. I am looking forward to making my first pair of socks with pattern provided."

"I'd managed to freak myself out over socks and Jem has helped me get over that fear. A brilliant class and I would throughly recommend it. "
