Introduction to the SPECAL Method for Care Professionals – Live Online Training
What is the SPECAL Method?
SPECAL (originally an acronym for Specialised Early Care for Alzheimer’s) is now used to describe a distinctive and practical approach to dementia care. The SPECAL method is tailored specifically for the condition of dementia, whatever the underlying cause, and can be learned and applied by anyone involved in the care of a person living with the condition.
This unique method places the well-being of the person with dementia at the heart of care, and has been shown to bring about immediate and sustainable improvements in quality of life – not only for the individual, but also for their carers and support network.
Key Benefits of the SPECAL Method:
- Treats dementia as a disability and works positively with it, rather than trying to ignore or overcome it
- Builds confidence in the person with dementia, potentially slowing the rate of deterioration
- Reduces the need for medication
- Helps the person remain in their own home for longer
- Minimises the distress often experienced during and after transitions into new care settings
“It gave me some very useful tools. It also gave me confidence and direction at a time when I needed it most.”
Understanding Dementia Differently
The SPECAL method is founded on an innovative way of understanding dementia from the perspective of the person experiencing it. Central to the approach is the SPECAL Photograph Album – a powerful analogy that helps explain:
- How memory works in a healthy brain
- What changes naturally with age
- The single, dramatic shift that occurs with the onset of dementia
This training provides a valuable opportunity to explore the SPECAL method and gain practical strategies that can be applied in everyday care settings.
