Introduction to Theatre Design - Create your own model stage set

with Theatre Designer Sophia Lovell Smith

Ever wondered what goes into the making a stage show?

Ever wondered how the look of a production comes about?

Fancy a chance to peek behind the scenery and imagine & create your own theatre design?

Maybe this is the opportunity for you….!

This course is an introduction and taster in set design.

The 5 sessions offer the opportunity to explore the creative process from ‘text to stage’. Working from a set text, participants are given the space to create their own set design. Gathering creative references from text and pictures, the design is first visualised in white card, building towards a final 3D presentation in a model box.

Materials are provided.

Theatre design is not only about technical skills but also about nurturing a love of theatre and creativity.

The approach in these sessions creates a welcoming space that is friendly and inclusive. No particular prior experience is needed and we work in an inquiring and inventive atmosphere, sharing insights, ambitions, ideas.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:

Participants: Abillity to identify, select and apply key aspects of theatre design in developing individual 3D proposals in model form.

The course also incorporates opportunities to discuss possibilities for development (such as further study).

REVIEWS FOR SOPHIA'S WORK:

...The artistry and craft reach the outer pinnacles of brilliance as they ascend into Sophia Lovell Smith’s creative designs of puppetry, animation and set aesthetics. Rod puppets are utilised most often, with a myriad of costume switched, sizes and choreography to give each woman a distinct personality – whether this is the stilted, automated movements of Lovelace or the peacocking stance of actor, inventor, and communications expert Hedy Lamarr. - The Reviews Hub - Jina and The STEM Sisters

...The flexibility and ingenuity of the set designed by Sophia Lovell-Smith, is quickly demonstrated when the journey begins. What seems initially to be a set filled with a couple of pallets and a few pieces of junk, turns into vehicles, shadow puppets, moonlight settings as they imaginatively transport the audience to magical lands. The set is the definite highlight of the show. - The Reviews Hub - The Owl and the Pussycat – The Civic, Barnsley
