Frequently asked questions about the
SET Framework Open Pathway

What are the benefits?

There are many benefits including the following:

  • A flexible and well respected alternative route to professional recognition

  • A means by which individuals, academic teams, and the University can demonstrate a commitment to professional development and a commitment to teaching excellence and quality enhancement

What is Open Pathway?

Open Pathway is a flexible, practice-based route which aims to contribute to the development of theoretically informed understandings and promote reflective practice while respecting disciplinary backgrounds.

How does Open Pathway work?

You will develop evidence of your professional practice through an e-portfolio. Evidence might include peer observations, conference presentations, and student feedback.

Based on your portfolio you then write a critically reflective narrative for presentation to the internal assessment panel. You also submit a detailed CV and references.

What support will I get?

You will be allocated a peer mentor to support you throughout the process. All mentors will be Fellows or Senior Fellows of the HEA. All mentors will have undertaken mentoring training.

Your mentor can guide you in your selection of evidence for professional practice, as well as give you feedback on your reflective narrative in preparation for submission to the assessment panel.

What other support is available?

You will be enrolled on the SurreyLearn SET Framework Portfolio module. In this module you will find support on preparing your e-portfolio, articles, suggestions for professional practice evidence, activities to stimulate reflection, videos.
