About this Event

5 WEEK COURSE

TUESDAY EVENINGS 2nd - 30th JUNE 2020

6:00pm - 8:30pm

You’ll be guided through the processes in a step by step way in each session.

The course will cover:

  • Heat transfer printing using disperse dyes
  • Screen printing onto textiles using blank screens & paper stencils
  • Coating & exposing imagery onto screens using photo sensitive emulsion and our UV exposure unit
  • Colour mixing and screen printing using textile binder & pigment inks

You’ll be encouraged to develop a range of experimental imagery and build up pattern, shape & colour in layers. The aim is to learn the technical aspects of the processes which you can then use to develop further ideas independently.

What experience do I need?

This workshop is aimed at complete beginners, although those with a prior understanding of the techniques may use the course to develop their skills and gain tutor advice and guidance in a friendly studio environment.

What will I make?

You’ll come away from the course with a range of printed textile samples using the different techniques, approximately A3 in size, which can be used at home for sewing projects or framed as finished artwork on cloth.

Who is my tutor?

Kirstie Williams is a founding member of Leeds Print Workshop. She is a practising designer and printmaker, creating both textile and paper based work. She studied MA Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art in 2010 and completed a PGCE teaching qualification at the University of Huddersfield in 2014. She is passionate about bringing together a new creative community in Leeds through the running and development of Leeds Print Workshop.

Do I need to bring anything?

Equipment and materials such as screens, squeegees, photo emulsion, a range of pigment ink colours, newsprint paper, cutting mats and knives are all provided.

Small textile samples will be provided to get you started but you will need to bring along fabric for further printing throughout the course.

Natural fabrics such as plain cotton or linen are best to screen print onto, whereas synthetics such as polyester or nylon work well for the heat transfer printing method. Your tutor can give you further advice on what fabrics to bring at the first session.

B&M Fabrics on Leeds Market offers a range of inexpensive fabrics.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Please note: Eventbrite’s booking fee is non-refundable.

By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step up into the building and four steps down to the toilets, and no accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
