Event description

Description

The Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) at the University of Leeds is delighted to be supported by Yorkshire Cancer Research to deliver a series of workshops aimed at providing clinicians and researchers with the knowledge to allow them to design and conduct clinical trials of Complex Interventions. The first workshop is a practical introduction to the design and conduct of trials of complex interventions with applications in cancer & palliative care.

Why should you attend this workshop?

Complex Interventions are those which comprise multiple interacting components and randomised trials of such interventions are often challenging to design, conduct and evaluate. This workshop will provide an overview of the key elements to consider during the design and conduct of these complex trials.

Who will benefit from this workshop?

Clinicians and Researchers with an interest in designing and conducting randomised controlled trials for evaluation of complex interventions in cancer or palliative care.

No previous experience is necessary but a basic knowledge of clinical trials would be an advantage.

Goals:

By the end of this workshop, attendees will have gained an understanding of:

  1. What is a complex intervention;

  2. Frameworks for evaluation of complex interventions;

  3. Design and rationale for various types of pilot and feasibility studies;

  4. Design and rationale for the main types of RCT designs;

  5. Rationale and methods for investigating intervention implementation;

  6. Key considerations for effective trial conduct.

Overview:

This one-day workshop, the first in a series, will provide a general introduction, via practical training to researchers, to the design and conduct of complex intervention trials.

This workshop will consist of a mixture of presentations and small group discussions, using relevant examples of best practice from CTRU’s extensive portfolio of complex interventions trials to illustrate key points and share successful solutions to the challenges faced in the design or conduct of complex intervention trials.
