Discover the fascinating Thames Estuary: Past, Present, and Future

Did you know that the Thames Estuary is teeming with life, hosting a diverse array of over 100 fish species, 96 bird species, and even three species of sharks and mammals? And that the distinct brown colour of the Thames comes from its natural muddy sediment? Additionally, the historic Old London Bridge, standing proud for over six centuries, played a significant role in shaping the river's flow.

If you're curious about the captivating story of the Thames Estuary — its history, its present state, and its future — then this course is tailor-made for you!

Join us for three engaging sessions, each lasting two hours, as we explore the following topics:

  • Unravelling the River: Discover the physical processes and chemical characteristics that influence the Thames, from the ebb and flow of tides to the varying salinity zones.
  • Hidden Ecosystems: Delve into the intricate biology of the Thames, exploring its key plants, animals, and diverse habitats such as salt marshes, seagrass meadows, and oyster beds.
  • A Journey Through Time: Embark on a captivating journey through the natural history of the Thames, understanding its profound impact on London's development, and uncovering the causes behind the river's water quality decline in the past.
  • Facing Environmental Challenges: Gain insight into the current state of the Thames, including the types of pollution it faces, such as plastic pollution, and grasp the basics of climate science as we explore the threats posed by climate change.
  • Navigating Governance and Enjoyment: Explore the various stakeholders involved in the management of the Thames and learn how you can safely enjoy the river's wonders, whether by boat, on foot, or through other recreational activities.
  • Shaping the Future: Gain knowledge of the TE2100 plan — a strategic framework for managing flood risk — and the Tideway Tunnel project aimed at enhancing water quality, as we discuss the resilience of the Thames in the face of the climate emergency.

This course is endorsed by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES), and upon full attendance and active participation, you will receive a certificate of completion.
