About this event

The scythe, with its outstanding green credentials and health benefits for both body and mind, is a highly efficient tool and is regarded as the appropriate technology for a wide variety of situations, from hay meadows to reedbeds, and community orchards to gardens. In addition, the scythe is an extremely cost effective tool. It is truly the tool for our times.

Join Nicole Clough, The Joy of Scything, at this haven for wildlife on the outskirts of Oxford, for this one day training to introduce the attendee to using and maintaining an Austrian scythe. The course is suitable for a range of experience levels, from complete beginners to those who have been using a scythe but feel that it could be working better for them.

• Mowing practice

• Sharpening in the field

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring a scythe?

If you have an Austrian scythe, please do bring it. If this is new, we will be covering set-up as part of the training. If you need to hire one from me, please add this to your booking.

Can I buy a scythe on the day?

I'm afraid I do not sell scythes but recommend visiting the Scythe Association of Britain and Ireland website to find suppliers that sell quality kit at fair prices.

Should I bring food and refreshments?

Please bring your own food and beverages with you for the day. Drinking water top-ups will be available on site, but there are no handy shops!

What facilities are at the venue?

Egrove Park is a little known haven, despite being the grounds of the Saïd Business School, Oxford. We will be based outdoors for the day. in the orchard and meadow, but I will have my events shelter if the weather requires it. We have access to a toilet but not electricity or tea facilities.
