The scythe, with its outstanding green credentials and health benefits for both body and mind, is a highly efficient tool and is regarded as the appropriate technology for a wide variety of situations, from hay meadows to reedbeds, and community orchards to gardens. In addition, the scythe is an extremely cost effective tool. It is truly the tool for our times.
Join Nicole Clough, The Joy of Scything, at this haven for wildlife on the outskirts of Oxford, for this one day training to introduce the attendee to using and maintaining an Austrian scythe. The course is suitable for a range of experience levels, from complete beginners to those who have been using a scythe but feel that it could be working better for them.
Course details:
• Introduction and familiarisation
• Setting up an Austrian scythe
• Movement and technique
• Mowing practice
• Sharpening in the field
• Maintenance and peening the blade demonstration
The course duration is approximately 6.5 hours, to include a 45 minute break for lunch, and morning and afternoon comfort/tea breaks.
Attendees will each require the following Austrian scythe kit:
• Snath plus handles
• Blade (for grass and non-woody vegetation) maximum length 65cm
• Scythe ring
• Allen key
• 10mm spanner
• Sharpening stone (canoe)
• Stone sheath or suitable container to hold sharpening stone and water
You are welcome to bring your own Austrian scythe. However, these can also be hired for the day – if this is required, please add scythe hire to your booking.
