Event Information
Description
This event is for teachers, teaching assistants, Sencos and parents/carers. It is free to attend but please book a place. The session will be led by Sue Calveley and Leanne Mcgowan. Leanne is SENco at Woodslee Primary school Wirral, and has recently hosted training for parents/carers of pupils with Downs syndrome. Sue is the SEND manager for a community interest company Edsential and has worked with pupils with a range of special educational needs.
The aim of the session is to explain to parents/ carers and teachers how Numicon can be used to support pupils with DS in their maths and to show activities that can be used in class to support number bonds and number recognition. This will be a practical session, Leanne and Sue will demonstrate activities that teachers/TA’s can deliver in class, and parents will have a better understanding of how Numicon can support pupils with DS in their maths.
Children with DS often require learning in small chunks and a multi-sensory approach. Therefore, we will use Numicon to demonstrate a key skill such as number bonds to 10-introduce the skill using Numicon, then relating it to something the child is really interested in.Specific to children with DS is making it multi-sensory and taking into account personal interests. – that’s where the teacher or adult working with the child play a key role.
Please bring your own Numicon if you have any.
