Introduction to Video Editing for Online Music Making - Part 2
About this event
This is the second of two workshops introducing the basics of video editing and video editing software, with a focus on editing music videos of bands and ensembles. The workshops build on some audio editing workshops we ran recently (see https://wemakemusicscotland.org/resources/) and by the end of the sessions you should be familiar with some core video editing concepts and know how to edit basic ‘mosaic’ or ’tiled’ videos of different musicians playing together.
This workshop will build on Part 1 and look at the use of some of video effects, subtitles and other techniques to keep your videos feeling interesting. It will also look at some techniques for managing larger numbers of files while you are editing. The workshop will have a mix of demos and practical exercise to help you get to grips with some of the basics and start editing a video.
What editing programmes/software can you use for the workshop?
We recommend downloading and using the following programmes for the workshop if you can, and will be using these for the demo:
• Adobe Premiere pro has a free trial for 30 days - beyond this it is has a number of payment options from monthly to annual subscriptions.
• DaVinci Resolve is a brilliant free and professional-level programme. You should check your computer requirements however to be sure it will work, and it is quite resource intensive
If you have your own video editing software, you are welcome to use this but be aware that there are many programmes, and they vary widely in how much you can do with them. To make these type of ‘mosaic’ or ‘tiled’ videos that you can work in multiple “layers”.
Professional-level programmes such as those mentioned above, or Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer, will be able to do everything you need. Programmes such as i-movie are great for some projects and intuitive to use, but many don’t have the function to use different video layers.
