Introduction to zine making

A zine is a creative, self-published booklet that anyone can make. They’re usually handmade or put together using simple tools, and they celebrate a DIY, independent approach. Zines can cover anything from personal stories and artwork to poetry, music, or social issues. What makes them exciting is that there are no rules – every zine reflects the unique voice, ideas, and creativity of its maker.

This session will introduce youth workers to the world of zines and prepare them to confidently deliver engaging zine-making workshops with their youth groups.

Through a mix of presentation, liv demonstration, and discussion, participants will learn about zine culture, understand their value as creative tools for youth engagement, and gain practical skills to make and teach zine-making.

This session will:
• Introduce youth workers to the concept, history, and cultural relevance of zines.
• Demonstrate how zines can be used as creative, accessible tools for youth voice, expression, and empowerment.
• Equip participants with practical skills to make a simple 8-page mini zine.
• Share examples of different zines from the collection to inspire different approaches.

Our funding supports training to be delivered to Residents of Scotland only.

Youth worker training is in high demand – please help us support youth workers to access the training and development they deserve with these simple steps:

  1. Tell us if you cannot attend more than 24hrs in advance. This allows us to free up the space for another youth worker (many sessions are oversubscribed) and means you will avoid being charged the £25 fee for late-notice cancellation or non-attendance.
  2. Check you can join with camera and microphone. Our online training is engaging, interactive and discussion-based – not a webinar format. Our members regularly tell us this is better learning and we are confident you will gain more.
  3. Eventbrite sends you all your information by email. You will receive your ticket at booking and be sent a reminder – with any login details if online – approximately 24hrs in advance. If there are materials and handouts, your facilitator will send these too.

Thank you for using our training and helping us to continue supporting the needs of our members and community-based youth work.
