Event description

Description

The practice of Kintsugi, which translates as ‘golden joinery’, started around fifteenth century Japan. It is the art of restoring broken ceramics with the natural lacquer urushi which is dusted or mixed with powdered gold. A practice that treats breakage as part of the object’s history and illuminates its significance.

In a 2-day workshop, Mizuyo Yamashita will take us through the five stages of kintsugi whilst giving you the rare opportunity to discover this century-old practice. In these two 2.5 hour hands-on sessions you will learn to use real urushi, mending using bronze gold powder.

To get the most out of the workshop, we encourage you to bring an item or several items, along with the pieces that make it whole. As it will be focused on the gluing process rather than filling, we won’t be able to fix larger cracks and big items.
