"I paint to allow myself to think over what has been observed, to ruminate safely
I play with mark-making, create patterns and structures
I paint with colour to be evocative, to explore colour relationships
I paint so I can learn to play or remember how to play"
Adebusola Ramsay, born in Lagos, Nigeria, based in Glasgow, Scotland. A visual artist whose practice has developed over the last two decades. My art takes form in painting and printmaking, working mostly with acrylics and features evocative colour contrast and textural details. Exploring different forms of mark-making to create new perspectives in irregular line and colour patterns.
My practice takes inspiration from life experiences, natural / fabricated forms and colours. The patterns, symbols, structures and imagery, in particular weaving and pattern making of traditional African cloths such as Aso Oke, Kente and Adire inspire her practice.
In tandem with painting, over the last 5 years, researching history of chattel slavery, processes racialisation and racism, and Black radical tradition in resistance to oppressive modes of being. During 2016 to 2018, co-led walking tours through Glasgow highlighting the historical links between city’s legacy, built heritage and transatlantic chattel slavery, colonisation and empire.
