Event description
Research Seminar Research Seminar "Invention, Innovation, and the Valley of Death". by Professor Goswami

About this Event

Abstract of the TalkTechnical textiles industry is flourishing and are used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products with diverse properties, including absorbent hygiene products, agriculture/horticulture, apparel, composites (e.g. aeronautical engineering) , construction, electronics, filtration, furnishings, insulation, personal protection, structural engineering, and medical textiles. Professor Goswami will discuss how his centre brings together expertise from disparate fields of academia including technical textiles, engineering, digital technology, textile processing, cellulose science, medical textiles (implantable, non-implantable, healthcare environment materials), fibre and polymer chemistry, pharmacology, surface functionalisation, material science and management to address a number of serious global challenges, including dealing with the quality of life of an ageing population, which is one of the four grand challenges. A desire of his centre is to influence the replacement of petrochemical-derived fibres with more sustainable, renewable alternatives in technical textiles. This aspiration is in direct synergy with the Global Challenges Research Fund. Professor Goswami will also discuss the real-life challenges in commercialising academic research with case studies from his own research. He will discuss the opportunities and challenges in working with the industry and the role of Higher Education Institutes in Innovation Management.

About the Speaker

Professor Parikshit Goswami (BSc (Tech), MSc, PhD, MRSC, ASDC, C Col, FTI, CText, CMgr, MCMI, FHEA) completed bachelor’s degree in textile technology and then worked within different industries, including a world-leading third-party textile testing and quality certification company. Subsequently, he did his MSc in Advanced Textile and Performance Clothing, and his PhD from the University of Leeds. Professor Goswami is the Director of Technical Textiles Research Centre and was the Head of Department of Fashion and Textiles at the University of Huddersfield. Prior to joining the University of Huddersfield, Professor Goswami was the Director of Research and Innovation at the School of Design, University of Leeds and he lead the Fibre and Fabric Functionalisation Research Group. Professor Goswami’s domains of research are product development using flexible materials and application of chemistry for functionalising textiles. Professor Goswami manages a large profile of research concerned with fibre/polymer science, nonwovens, medical textiles (implantable materials and non-implantable materials), sustainable materials (fundamentally understand the properties of new material), application and development of nano/submicron fibres for novel applications, and plasma treatment for functionalising textiles and textile chemistry. He is a member of Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC), Education, Qualifications and Accreditation Board (EQAB), and is a member of EDANA’s R&D working group.
