Event description
Neither binary nor straightforward, this lecture argues that gender is a vital frame for media history and analysis.

About this Event

Bodies matter, and women's bodies are particularly charged sites of meaning in popular media cultures. Images of women populate media culture but work by female film and TV producers is often unacknowledged. In what manner is women's visibility in the media legible or permissible? Neither binary nor straightforward, this lecture argues that gender is a vital frame for media history and analysis.

In this public inaugural lecture, Professor Yvonne Tasker will explore the meaning of gendered bodies in media cultures. She will look at the career of socialist filmmaker Jill Craigie to show how radical women have long been involved in the British film and television industries.

Yvonne Tasker is Professor of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds. She is the author or editor of numerous books and articles exploring gender and popular culture, including Working Girls: Gender and Sexuality in Popular Cinema (1998), Interrogating Postfeminism: Gender and the Politics of Popular Culture (with Diane Negra, 2007), Soldiers’ Stories: Military Women in Cinema and Television since WWII (2011) and Gendering the Recession: Media Culture in an Age of Austerity (with Diane Negra, 2014). She is currently co-investigator on the AHRC-funded project Jill Craigie: Film Pioneer and is co-authoring (with Dr Sadie Wearing, LSE) a monograph on Craigie provisionally entitled Daughter of Dissent.
