Event description

Description

March 5th sees the Glasgow launch of the much-anticipated debut album from Glasgow based folktronica five-piece, Inyal. Sensitive and innovative electronics are perfectly balanced against mercurial tunes and evocative Gaelic songs, performed here by Radio 2 Young Folk Award winner, Josie Duncan.

Across its nine tracks, the sound of the album comprises left-field electronica, hip-hop, jazz and orchestral music, all while remaining rooted in the virtuosity and unmistakeable hallmarks of modern folk. Ethereal kalimbas echo around a centuries old waulking song, pulsating synth lines intertwine with nimble, melodic whistle playing, and in the album’s more placid moments, grand pianos rub shoulders with serene field recordings to paint ancient Gaelic song in a subtle, contemporary light.

The album was recorded and mixed by Mattie Foulds (Shooglenifty, Rachel Newton) at Carbiou Recording and mastered by Andy ‘Hippy’ Baldwin at London mastering institution, Metropolis. Additional string parts were recorded by BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year, Charlie Stewart, who will be joining the band on the night alongside fiddle virtuoso and all round class act, Laura Wilkie.

-------------

Opening up the evening will be the highly adventurous, technically peerless and much lauded Fergus McCreadie Trio. Hailing from Scotland, the band deliver thoughtful compositions which are rooted in jazz, but are also strongly influenced by the heritage of Scottish traditional music.

Fresh off winning the Peter Wittingham Award for 2017 and being named one of Jazzwise's 'One to Watch,' McCreadie writes music that is as nuanced as it is powerful. The trio have recently been playing the major Scottish jazz festivals to much acclaim, and look forward to releasing their debut album in the near future.

-------------

To top it all off, one of Glasgow's favourite selectors, David Barbarossa, will be in charge of the 1s and 2s in the bar upstairs after the bands. An afterparty of sorts. Amazing.
