Event description
This funding masterclass session focuses on Major Donors and be delivered by Helen Carrick - Head of Major Gifts at Queens University.

About this Event

Sponsored by Hays NI and supported by Chariteer this is the second in a series of 4 Fundraising Masterclasses that will endeavour to provide guidance and advice to the Fundraising Sector in NI - the first one will focus on Major Donor Fundraising.

This session will be delivered by Helen Carrick - Head of Major Gifts at Queens University Belfast.

A major donor is an individual who makes a gift that has a significant impact on the work of a fundraising organisation. There is no set threshold for what a ‘major gift’ is. Major donor fundraising is about people and relationships. Often it involves a lot of background work, meetings, research, and events before a gift is made.

Because the success of major donor fundraising is so dependent on development of relationships with individuals, it’s often described as an art rather than a science.

Helen has been a fundraiser since 2005. Working for local and national children’s charities in London and Nottingham, Helen built up experience in events, legacies and major gifts fundraising before moving home to Northern Ireland in 2011 to take up the post of Fund Development Manager at the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland. During her time in post, Helen managed a small fundraising team and worked in partnership with individuals and businesses to set up charitable funds which delivered grants to local communities.

In 2014 Helen moved to Queen’s University Belfast as Head of Major Gifts. The role includes leading and managing a team of seven fundraisers and working with alumni, and others, to raise philanthropic income to support higher education.

Outside of work, Helen is a mum of two small children Bonnie (3) and Ernie (1), a member of the Alpha Northern Ireland Advisory Board and Coordinator of the Kilfinan programme in Northern Ireland, a confidential mentoring programme for charity chief executives.
