Retail IoT:

Analytics and big data

The promise of increasing volumes of more timely data (in theory) should lead to better informed business decision making. Ultimately businesses, whatever their size, need useful / relevant data to enable them to spot new market opportunities; expose inefficiencies within their organization and allow their businesses to quickly adapt to better meet the needs of their customers. As the world becomes ever more connected how do we a harness the data we are generating in a meaningful way that can deliver real benefits to businesses and their consumers? 

We will explore:

  • Strategies to extract real time value from data
  • What foundations need to be in place to enable data transformation
  • Where does Edge Computing fit in?

Connectivity and infrastructure

With increased cross border trade stimulated by real time connectivity, the importance of both robust infrastructure and the harmonisation of regulations are becoming ever more important. In many instances the laws of countries are struggling to adapt and keep up with the pace of technology. This coupled with the investment in the necessary infrastructures is presenting nations with challenges they couldn’t have predicted even 10 years ago. Major investment decisions by businesses are being impacted not just by physical location, but the ability of the host country to provide the necessary infrastructure and skill sets now and in to the future. 

We will explore:

  • The role of 5G in IoT
  • How to create a bottleneck-less world
  • What and where do further investments in infrastructure look like

IoT architectures

The growth of interest among consumers in technologies that are seen to offer lifestyle enhancements is both stimulating investment at corporate level and leading to the expansion of ideas that be tailored to offer practical benefits. With wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth already established in the domestic environment there are established technologies that communication can be built around. Devices and services that harness existing wireless technology in the home are likely to achieve greater penetration and acceptance. Building the links seamlessly between the end user and the host are critical to widespread adoption.

  • The critical role of open and Interoperable architecture
  • Establishing a framework and protocol for end-to-end connectivity (LPWAN, LORA etc)

Application of machine learning and AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Real time data and the ability of software that learns from continuous data streams creates exciting opportunities from automated stock reordering, to making and even replacing complex manual manpower processes.  Anticipating customer demand and spotting where the real sales opportunities are would historically have required human interaction to analyze the data.  24/7 data streams can be analysed automatically and at a very practical scale continuous weather data can automatically trigger alerts to send fleets of road gritters out at night to ensure the roads are safe for use the following morning. Automated vehicles continually feeding back data have the capability to activate the replanning of routes to keep traffic flowing efficiently at peak times.

  • How and where AI can be applied to enterprise
  • What are the challenges associated with widespread AI
  • Do we need to set a common framework for the advancement of AI in society

User applications & business use-cases for IoT

IoT offers is the ability for the world to become more energy smart leading to much more effective use of resources. As more of our daily tasks are continuously monitored a better understanding of peak energy consumption and the ability to match power generation to real time demand, rather than just through historical planning will lead to a significant reduction in wasted energy. For businesses applications that lead to greater operating efficiencies and for individuals monitoring that leads to better energy management and leads to lower utility bills are already being adopted. The ever increasing pressures on global resources will only accelerate demand for practical applications that deliver tangible benefits.
