IP Seminar: Should you protect your innovations? Are you free to exploit them!?

Solving a problem in science, technology, engineering and medicine can often be an inventive activity. Would others be faced with the same problem? If so, there may be value in protecting your invention, so you can control who exploits it and benefit from that.

We are going to explore patents, looking at what you can patent and indeed, whether patenting is right for your invention. What does a patent give you? When should you file a patent application? What must you do? What must you not do? And answer all your questions – abstract and specific. This is a conversation.

To bring this to life, we will draw on some of the many patent applications filed by the University of Liverpool, as examples.

Dr Richard Bray MPhys (Hons) CPA EPA – Partner at Appleyard Lees

Richard works with a very wide range of clients, from innovative universities, start-ups and spin-outs, through to globally-known household names in the fields of electronic consumer goods, defence, commerce, and foods products.

The variation of his client base provides unique challenges and working styles, which allows Richard to tailor his expert advice to the client.

Richard has a passion for helping people understand the world of intellectual property (IP), providing in-house, technology specific awareness training to clients, tutoring for The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA), and providing IP training for further academic institutions.

Dr Howard Read MA MSc LLM PhD EDA CPA EPA – Partner at Appleyard Lees

Having worked in industry and the academic sector before joining the profession, Howard understands the challenges faced in these areas and appreciates the commercial realities of, and the value derivable from, intellectual property.

Howard is fluent in both English and Portuguese, has published a number of articles in scientific journals and been named as inventor on several patents.
