Event description
The IPPR Oxford Media Convention will convene participants to shape a renewed vision for the role of the media in a healthy democracy.

About this event

A strong independent media is crucial to the proper functioning of our democratic system. It shapes how we understand and relate to the world around us, and it should equip citizens to make informed, sound democratic decisions.

Covid-19 marks the start of a ’decade of disruption’; with climate change, globalisation and automation set to reshape our society. The media can play a crucial role in helping our democratic societies navigate these trends. But we need to embrace reform and renewal in the media in order for this to happen.

This summer, the IPPR Oxford Media Convention will convene participants to shape a renewed vision for the role of the media in a healthy democracy. We’ll explore the steps needed to build a stronger, more sustainable media ecosystem to help provide stability in the decades ahead.

The 2021 Convention will take place in two parts:

  • A series of online sessions - Our main programme will take place online on Monday 19th, Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st July. We’ll be using a designated virtual platform specifically designed for hosting forums and conferences. This offers a range of audience interaction tools and networking opportunities for attendees, retaining the important features of in-person events. Further details on what to expect can be found here.

  • A London drinks reception - Provided that restrictions permit it, we look forward to welcoming attendees for a drinks reception to conclude the conference. This will take place at a central London venue with outside space on the evening of Wednesday 21st July. Further details on this will be shared with attendees nearer the time.

For further details please visit the Oxford Media Convention website.
