Description

Registration from 18:00, lecture starts at 18:30 followed by drinks and canapes

2017 marks the centenary of the Battle of Arras, a major offensive by British and Imperial troops against German defensive positions in the Pas-de-Calais between 9 April and 16 May 1917. Men from the East of England formed a significant contingent within the allied forces at Arras. Five Battalions of the Suffolk Regiment took part in the fighting and over 700 men from the Regiment lost their lives in the offensive. The British Legion (Ipswich), the University of Suffolk and students from Stoke High School and St Albans High School have recently been engaged in a commemorative project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (First World War: Then and Now) to examine the significance of the Battle of Arras and to explore the role of men from Ipswich in it. This lecture will highlight some of the findings and outcomes of the project and the experiences of the students who participated in it.

Presenters: Robin Vickery (Royal British Legion, Ipswich), Dr Harvey Osborne (History, University of Suffolk), students from the University of Suffolk, St Albans High School (Ipswich) and Stoke High School (Ipswich).
