Refugees welcome: Exploring outdoor learning in the context of ‘integration’

Susanne Paulus, University of Edinburgh

In this presentation, I will discuss elements of my PhD which explores outdoor learning in the context of transmigration realities. More specifically, my research focuses on the provision and particularities of informal outdoor learning opportunities for refugees. Several outdoor leisure, outdoor education or environmental education organisations across Europe are currently running projects which reach out to people who have recently arrived in the country, city, new location. Similarly, several charities, social work or community education providers working with refugees include outdoor activities in their programmes. Key examples from the grey literature show that outdoor activity provision for refugees is rapidly expanding, yet fragmented and lacks a clear conceptualisation. The exploration of this specific outdoor learning sector is particularly important because while it encompasses a wide range of tensions, it is exactly these tensions which also carry the potential for learning. The practice I am investigating into is marked by increased socio-cultural, linguistic, religious, socio-economic (…) plurality and takes a very particular approach to ‘integration’ through activities in the outdoors. The inherent tensions arising from the resident-newcomer relationships, from the characteristics of the activities, and from the different approaches to place provide the grounds for significant learning opportunities in the context of multiple identities. More deeply understanding the ways both organisations and participants are dealing with questions of difference, participation, or place attachment can provide crucial insights about means of approaching integration and refugee recognition, and more broadly about ways of living together in societies profoundly marked by migration.

Susanne Paulus is a doctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh, Moray House School of Education. She holds a M.A. in Intercultural Education (Free University Berlin) and a MSc in Outdoor Education (University of Edinburgh). In recent years she worked in Switzerland for the National Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development, as well as for the National Youth Council in an advocacy project for minor unaccompanied refugees.
