Description

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Ireland chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). SIGCSE is the third largest (~2,800 member) and second oldest (founded 1970) of nearly 40 ACM SIGs.

The chapter launch will be held at the School of Computer Science at UCD on December 11 from 14.00-18.00 (tentative schedule below). The launch will feature keynotes by

  • Professor Amber Settle (DePaul University, Chicago, USA), SIGCSE Board Member (immediate past-chair): "SIGCSE and diversity: some success and a challenge"
  • Dr Paul Dickson (Ithaca College, NY, USA): "Timeless Lessons from Teaching Programming: Or Not."

We are delighted to have Prof. Joe Carthy, College Principal and Dean of Science at UCD, and Dr Chris Bleakley, Head of School of Compuer Science at UCD, deliver opening addresses and welcomes.

Attendance is free but registration is essential.

Schedule:

  • 14.00 - 15.00: Early arrivals networking with Poster Showcase* tea, coffee and biscuits

  • 15.00 - 17.00: Welcome, opening, chapter launch and keynote addresses

  • 17.00 - onward: Reception in UCD University Club with festive treats

Slight scheduling changes if required will be announced at https://sigcseire.acm.org, on the SIGCSEire members’ listserv, and to those registered via Eventbrite.

*If you would like to present a poster (either a work-in-progress or a poster you previously presented) please email Brett (below) directly. Any Computing Education or Computing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion posters are welcome.
