Description

Irish Parliamentarians and their sons killed in the First World War. Lecturer DR IVAN GIBBONS

As we approach the final commemorations of the First World War it is appropriate not only to remember the 200,000 Irish soldiers who fought in the war but also to highlight a previously neglected aspect of the contribution made by Ireland in the Great War. Twenty MPs both nationalist and unionist served as soldiers with four MPs and four Irish peers losing their lives. In addition, many sons of both nationalist and unionist Irish politicians were killed. This is their story.

Dr Ivan Gibbons studied at Queens University Belfast and Birkbeck College, University of London where he gained his doctorate. He is former Programme Director of Irish Studies at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, is a Director of the Irish Cultural Centre and is the organiser of the Centre’s annual lecture series. He lectures and writes on British and Irish history and is author of “The British Labour Party and the Establishment of the Irish Free State 1918-1924”.
