Event description
Join artists, architects, curators and researchers for a series of conversation-based sessions exploring modernism in NI and global contexts

About this event

CCA Derry~Londonderry invites you to join us for an online seminar series accompanying the launch of the exhibition Irish Modernisms. The exhibition and seminar series have been co-curated by Catherine Hemelryk (CCA Derry~Londonderry) and Matthew Retallick (Manchester School of Art). To coincide with the new exhibition Irish Modernisms: legacies of modernism in the North, the CCA Derry-Londonderry invites you to a series of mid-week talks and discussions which examine the legacy of Modernism. Starting with the island of Ireland, the geographical reach will expand over the weeks to explore global contexts. This series will culminate in a publication, which will be available through the CCA Shop.

This seminar series has been made possible through a bursary award from the British Art Network.

• Wednesday 23 June, 13.00–14:30, Session 1: Anna Liesching (curator of art at the Ulster Museum, National Museums Northern Ireland) will discuss Irish painter Mainie Jellett (1897–1944) and Fionna Barber (Reader in Art History at the Manchester School of Art and Research Degrees Co-ordinator for Art/Visual Culture) will share research on NI sculptor Deborah Brown to look at their legacies within Irish Modernism.

• Wednesday 14 July, 13:00 –14:30, Session 2: Irish Modernisms – A discussion with the exhibiting artists (James Ashe, Rachel Campbell-Palmer, Phillip McCrilly, Grace McMurray, and Ben Weir) of the CCA Derry-Londonderry show Irish Modernisms.

You can book for one or more sessions in the series. Most sessions involve a presentation and/or in-conversation, followed by a separate lunch-time discussion for audience members. The lunch-time discussions will be smaller-group sessions. Please see below for a full programme and booking links. If the session you wish to attend is fully booked, please email britishartnetwork@tate.org.uk to be added to a waiting list.

Registration closes 24 hours before each session

Separate registration options are available for British Art Network (BAN) members and for non-members, and you can book for one or more seminars in the series.

NOTE: All events will take place via Zoom Pro. The seminars will be live captioned automatically. We are recording the presentations as audio by agreement with our speakers, but not the discussions.
