Event description

Description

The Monte Bernorio Institute of Antiquity Studies of the Cantabric Region will be celebrating a scientific meeting on the formation of the peoples of the Cantabric Region during Iron Age, in the context of the European Atlantic façade. The event will take place in Santander (Cantabria, Spain), on the 24th, 25th and 26th of May 2018.

This conference will gather the works of the most prominent researchers, as well as emerging researchers, who work both in Spain and beyond our borders. Through their contributions, we would like to create a vision of the topic that can serve as a reference both to the research community and the general public.

Content

The chronology of this conference covers from Late Prehistory to the Early Medieval Ages. The main focus will be the Iron Age, the moment of emergence of the first ethnic identities (peoples), with complex political structures and self-governance. This phenomenon is common to Atlantic Europe, and is related to similar processes that take place in Europe. The Hispano-Roman period, the Late Antiquity, and the Early Medieval period will also be covered by the presentations.

The meeting will take a primarily archaeological perspective, without setting aside the texts by Greco-Latin authors, ethnoarchaeology, and other forms of scientific research. The approach will be one of historical long duration, paying special attention to the processes of change and continuance or permanence as part of the longue durée phenomena.

Another element essential to this conference is the role of the Atlantic façade, as an area of cultural traffic and exchange during Late Prehistory and Antiquity. In this sense, we use the term Celtic Mare Nostrum, to define a research proposal in which the Atlantic Ocean is more than a mere maritime area.

In conclusion, the content of the different papers will help us understand the genesis, and the development processes of the different human communities, as well as the processes of creation of their cultural identities. These processes are very complex culturally and socially. They are closely related to the different territories and geographic areas where they take place, as well as the short, medium, and long distance cultural connections.

Each speaker will have about 40 minutes to present their paper, followed by 20 minutes for questions and discussion. Our conference proposal recovers the idea of a scientific meeting focused on mutual learning through the exposition of knowledge, and the discussion of suggestions and ideas. For this purpose, we have chosen to reduce the number of speakers, and extend the discussion time.

The conference will be mainly in Spanish (the language of the host country), but the official languages of the conference will be those of the Atlantic façade: English, French, and Spanish. Each paper will be presented on one of these three languages.

Development.

The meeting will take place in the city of Santander (Cantabria, Spain), an important harbor located in the centre of the Cantabric region.

It will be a three day conference, divided in two parts:

  • 24th and 25th of May: Santander venue, Cantabria. It will take place in the Events Hall of the Fundación Caja Cantabria, Centro de Acción Social y Cultural (CASYC). It is located at: Calle Tantín, nº 25. 39001, Santander, Cantabria, Spain.

  • 26th of May: Aguilar de Campoo venue, Palencia. We will visit the site of the oppidum of Monte Bernorio (Pomar de Valdivia, Palencia). This is one of the most important and emblematic archaeological sites of Cantabria. After the visit, there will be a talk about Archaeomusicology, and the event will close with a recital by music John Kenny, with reproductions of musical instruments from the Iron Age.

The price of the ticket doesn't include the trip from the venue at Santander to the one at Aguilar de Campoo.
