Distance: 5 miles
We’re going to travel back in time on this walk and reimagine this tranquil landscape under very different circumstances. It wasn’t so long ago that the peaceful woods and streams of this area were alive with the smoke, heat, and noise of the Wealden iron industry.
We will be pausing midway to enjoy the annual Fernhurst Furnaces event, held on the historic site of North Park Furnace, one of the few remaining visible relics of this industrial age. Here, we’ll be able to listen to a guided talk about the furnace, its operation, and its place in the broader story of the Weald.
We will also have the chance to watch dramatic historical reenactments by the Sealed Knot society, see demonstrations, and explore stalls offering local food and drink. It’s an immersive opportunity to connect what we see in the landscape today with what once stood here centuries ago.
