Irrigation visit to Valencia, Spain 18-21 October 2016
This is a unique opportunity to visit the Jucar River Basin close to Valencia, Spain, and to see the Turia Water Tribunal in action.
Prof Joaquin Andreu, Insititute Water Engineering Valencia has kindly agreed to help us organise this visit. Some of you may recall he made an excellent presentation at our Annual UKIA Conference in March on the challenges of drought in the Jucar valley.
The Jucar River Basin has a Mediteranean climate. Some 80% of the water demand is for irrigation but demand from towns and industry is increasing, there is a lake and wetlands which rely on return flows from irrigation, and the increasing severity of droughts, with dry periods lasting up to 10 years, are all causing serious concerns for water managers. Groundwater continues to be vitally important in providing robustness against droughts.
We will visit the Jucar Basin, hear how they plan and manage water resources, and see major water infrastructure, including dams and irrigation systems. We will also see how both traditional and modern irrigation practices for citrus, rice, and vegetables have shaped irrigated farming across the region and we will meet with local farmers and water abstractor groups. . We are also arranging an evening boat trip on Lake Albufera which lies in the estuary of the Jucar basin.
We will also visit the Turia Water Tribunal which meets every Thursday at mid day - one of the oldest legal courts in the world which deals with irrigation disagreements and illegal abstractions from the Turia River.
