Event description

Description

An open conversation between academic researchers and pole dance artists about being a woman in Islington

In September 2017, the BBC Woman’s Hour published a report that identified the best places in Britain to be a woman by analysing data across eight dimensions including housing affordability, education and safety. Out of the 380 British Local Authorities, Islington came out at the very bottom of the list.

To understand both the data and the lived realities behind it, Impact Hub Islington has invited two very different perspectives into a conversation:

  • Authors of the BBC Woman’s Hour Report from Islington-based NatCen Social Research

  • Artists from Persepolis Pole, a female-led arts and cultural impact project in Islington that aims to challenge public perceptions of pole dance

The academics and artists will reflect on how women’s identities are represented in public, what it’s like to be a female performer in Islington’s pole dance entertainment industry and what kind of change is needed to make Islington a better place for all women.

Join us for an evening of powerful conversation, collective exploration and a graceful performance by Islington-based Miss Pole Dance UK, Rachel Tolzman. You will also have the opportunity to learn a few simple moves on the pole if you’re curious!

For us, this event is the start of a much wider conversation about the social dynamics and inequalities in Islington and a great opportunity to bring together perspectives that rarely meet.

The event will be facilitated by Yasmeen Akhtar, joint CEO of TrustLab, a consultancy focused on building courageous and inclusive leadership. Yasmeen has over 15 years of facilitation experience across various sectors and has previously worked with The Greater London Lieutenancy, the Metropoligan Police Force, over 30 leading UK universities and 70+ British Parliamentarians.

Who is this event for?

Anyone interested in digging deeper into the complexities of human experience, people from and beyond Islington and anyone curious to find out more about the art of pole dance. This is not simply a 'women's issue' and we encourage people of all gender identities to join.
