This is a recording of a talk called Is it or isn’t it? A Field Guide to Arts & Crafts Churches which was recorded on 30th March 2021.
In this entirely new talk, Dr Alec Hamilton, author of Arts & Crafts Churches (Lund Humphries, 2020), considers twenty-two churches that deserve to be better known – and why. As well as some that glory in their obscurity! These are churches you have never heard of. Now they come, blinking, into the light. And he has not lectured on any of them before.
Along the way, he grapples with some thorny questions. Can a medieval church be Arts & Crafts? Can a ‘Victorian’ church be Arts & Crafts? Can you trust stained glass – and, if not, why not? Why are outsides and insides often so very much at odds? Which is more important – the structure or the furniture? What is it, exactly, that sets these churches apart? And, when we all can go visiting again – what are the things to look for? And what to ignore? So - is it, or isn’t it? Armed with this, you cannot go wrong!
This talk – his second for the Victorian Society, and fourth in all (one for SAHGB last November and one for CCT in February) – is, he says, to be his last on the subject. After 15 years of research, from BA to DPhil and book, it is time to move on. Last chance to see, then….
After booking a ticket, you will be given access to the recording of the event. Please ignore the event date in the listings.
