Professor Andy Stirling, Science Policy Research Unit, Sussex University

Andy Stirling is Professor of Science and Technology Policy in the Science Policy Research Unit at Sussex University. Focusing especially on issues of power, uncertainty and diversity in science and society, he’s served over the years on various UK, EU and UN bodies on energy policy, toxic substances, GM Crops, science advice, public engagement and social transformation – most recently as advisor for the evaluation of the UK Government’s Nuclear Innovation Programme.

Dr Fiona Rayment, Non-Executive Director for Nuclear Restoration Services, trustee and nuclear advisor

Fiona Rayment enjoys a plural career covering nuclear advisory and non-executive director roles and has dedicated decades to the nuclear sector with extensive strategic and operational experience. Her current roles across the sector include being an advisor to the CEO of the National Nuclear Laboratory and the Office of Nuclear Regulation Chief Nuclear Inspector’s Independent Advisory Panel. Fiona is chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Energy Division at CEA - the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, a Non-Executive Member of the UK Space Agency Steering Board, a Non-Executive Director of Nuclear Restoration Services Ltd., Patron of Women in Nuclear UK and President of the UK Nuclear Institute.

In addition, Fiona is a vice chair of the Nuclear Energy Agency’s Steering Committee Bureau and Policy Director of the Generation IV International Forum. Fiona has long advocated widening participation in science and engineering and champions our sector-leading approach to diversity and inclusion. She was awarded an OBE in 2017 and the French Légion d’Honneur in 2020.

Professor Richard Taylor, BNFL Chair in Nuclear Energy Systems, Dalton Nuclear Institute, Professor of Nuclear Engineering, The University of Manchester and Non-Executive Director at NAMRC

Richard was previously the Chief Engineer of the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory. He has over 30 years of experience within the UK nuclear industry. He is a professional engineer with a background in the design, construction and commissioning of nuclear facilities. Richard is a co-founder of The Beam nuclear and social research network.

Professor Simone Turchetti, Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, The Univerity of Manchester

Simone is a Professor of history of science and technology at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine of The University of Manchester. He is a president and co-founder of the IUHPST/DHST Commission on Science, Technology and Diplomacy (STAND), and secretary of the European Society for the History of Science. Simone researches and teaches the history of nuclear energy and weapons. He has a book on the Pontecorvo Affair and is the unit coordinator for the HSTM/UCIL unit "The Nuclear Age". Read more

The Dalton Seminar Series covers a range of nuclear topics, bringing guest speakers together with experts from across the University. It is hosted by the Dalton Champions - members of Manchester's nuclear research community who work to enhance the network. Champions are based throughout the University, representing the many departments in which nuclear related research takes place.
