Description

Inverness Science Festival 2018 - Public Programme

Seaweed aquaculture: the future of ocean farming. Cecilia Biancacci, Scottish Association for Marine Science.

Global aquaculture production reached 90.4 million tonnes in 2012 (US$144.4 billion), including 23.8 million tonnes of aquatic algae, with an estimated annual value of US $6.4 billion. Seaweeds are ecologically and economically important, providing essential ecosystem services and biomass for different applications, such as food, phycocolloids, animal feeds, soil additive, nutraceuticals, chemicals, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The demand has increased all over the world in the last half-century, hence a sustainable production of algae to protect wild stocks is of vital importance, now and in the future.

Booking essential. Please note you must produce a valid ticket on arrival.
