Isle of Man Sport Coaching Festival 2019

Helping best practice become common practice!

Welcome to the Isle of Man Sport Coaching Festival 2019

After the success of the inaugural event last year, Isle of Man Sport is delighted to once again offer local coaches the opportunity to learn and develop under the guidance of leading coach educators and practitioners.

The festival philosophy is very much about bringing you the latest information and most up to date workshops to help you be the best coach you can be.

This year’s festival promises to be even bigger and better, with a range of unique experiences lined up:

  • Two new workshops from UK Coaching

  • Breakfast with a World Cup winning rugby player

  • Interactive master-classes with leading UK coaching experts.

The featured workshops will delve into how coaches can connect with their participants, build rapport and help meet their individual needs to ensure everyone has a session that is active, purposeful and enjoyable.

By understanding how to create great learning environments, coaches can develop exciting sessions that engage their participants and enable them to develop positive relationships with sport and physical activity that will stay with them for life!

6:00pm - 9:30pm Isle of Man Sport Institute

with John Mills John MillsIt all kicks off on the Friday with “Coaching the Person in Front of You" a brand new workshop on the UK Coaching roster.

To ensure you're fuelled up for the evening a hot-pot dinner will be provided. This will be a relaxed way to break the ice and get to know your fellow coaches before starting your weekend of learning.

During this workshop, discover how to be truly person-centred, putting participants’ feelings, thoughts, ambitions and motivations at the heart of everything you do

Coaching is all about people. This newly-launched workshop will give you a deeper awareness of why great people skills are an intrinsic part of being an effective coach. Ultimately, the more coaches understand and connect with people they coach (by observing, noticing and communicating) the more they will be able to support them and help them thrive.

Coaching contact time is often limited with access to participants sometimes being as little as an hour per week at best. Scott McNeill will help you explore methods in creating effective learning environments to help you get the most out of your coaching sessions.

Contstraints Led Approach Coaching

1:30pm - 3:30pm Isle of Man Sport Institute and Astro Pitch

with Danny Newcombe

Danny Newcombe

A fantastic follow up session to Scott McNeill's "Creating Effective Learning Environments" workshop. Danny will take you through the nuances of coaching with the constraints led approach. Coaching often looks to break skills down and use drills to learn them, which bear little resemblance to the demands of the sport or activity and can lack transfer to the competition environment. A common example could be dribbling balls around cones.

Learn how to structure your session to afford participants the opportunity to find solutions to their performance problems. By constraining different aspects of the activity or game such as the people, the environment and the task, coaches can maximise the transfer of skill learning into competitive scenarios.
