Description

Amnesty International UK and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign invites you to:

ISRAEL/PALESTINE: 50 YEARS OF OCCUPATION – 50 YEARS OF REPRESSION OF PEACEFUL PROTEST

Panel discussion on the many ways Israel’s authorities repress peaceful protest, with Palestinian human rights defenders Issa Amro and Farid al-Atrash who both face charges for peaceful protest.

There will be a reception after the panel discussion.

Issa Amro and Farid al-Atrash are Palestinian human rights defenders facing charges in an Israeli military court for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly. Both are committed to non-violent activism. They risk being sentenced to prison, if found guilty.

Issa Amro is the founder and coordinator of Youth Against Settlements. He and YAS are internationally known for their commitment to non-violent activism against the illegal Israeli settlements in Hebron and the discriminatory restrictions placed on Palestinians by the Israeli authorities in the city.

Farid al-Atrash is a human rights lawyer. He is also a member of the general assembly of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee, a collective of Palestinian, community-based groups across the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) that organize marches, strikes, legal campaigns, and support the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement.

Join us to hear them talk about their work campaigning against the occupation and talk about the charges they face in Israeli military court. Then speakers from Amnesty International and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign will expand on the wider repression faced by Palestinian activists when campaigning for their human rights and against Israel’s abusive & discriminatory occupation.

There will be a panel discussion and Q&A with:

Baroness Tessa Blackstone – British peer and academic (Chair)
Issa Amro* – Human Rights Defender and founder of Youth Against Settlements
Farid al-Atrash – Human Rights Defender and Lawyer
Hugh Lanning – Chair, Palestine Solidarity Campaign
Ashira Ramadan – Israel/Palestine Researcher, Amnesty International

*Issa was arrested on 4 September after he posted something on Facebook criticising the arrest of a journalist. He was released on 10 September, so we hope he is still able to attend this event.
