This event brings together engineers and industry professionals to explore practical approaches to sustainability within the built environment, with a focus on embodied carbon, reuse, and low-carbon design strategies.
Format:
Presentation 1 - Introduction to Sustainability (20 mins) – Mike Sefton (Chartered Evnironmentalist) will set the stage with a broad introduction, framing the challenges and opportunities around sustainability in construction.
Presentation 2 - Local Story: Lean Design & Reuse (20 mins) – Helen (Founding Director at renaissance), joined by colleague Patrick Clayton (Associate Director), will share insights from their work at renaissance, a dynamic team of structural and civil engineers with offices in Manchester & Glasgow. Their presentation will explore:
- The benefits of reuse in construction.
- The research, experience, and collaboration required to achieve positive outcomes.
- Case studies illustrating lean design and repurposing embodied carbon.
Renaissance’s commitment as a signatory of the IStructE and ICE Climate and Biodiversity Emergency declarations.
Presentation 3 - Carbon Calculations & Technical Insights (20 mins) – Tom Harley-Tuffs (Sustainability Consultant) will cover the technical aspects of carbon calculations, including methods, applications, and their role in shaping sustainable design decisions.
Key Themes:
- Reuse and repurposing of existing structures and materials.
- Embodied carbon and high SCORES ratings.
- Design efficiency and continuous improvement across projects.
- Collaboration and innovation in tackling the climate challenge.
Q&A Session At The End– Open discussion with all presenters.
