A talk by Spencer Fereday BEng (Hons) MIStructE - Mann Williams

The University of Bath’s School of Management is a leading national and international business school with an ambition to continue as a globally recognised School. The University of Bath is investing £70 million into the School of Management to enable it to deliver a 21st century learning and research environment. The building design focuses on working together in an open layout to enable effective teamwork, supporting the key philosophies of 'engagement, education and collaboration'.

Restrictions on building height and footprint to meet Planning requirements has generated a two storey basement formed into the Limestone. This combined with the need to resolve boundary and existing service constraints led to an early enabling contract to reduce overall project risk while the main building design was allowed to progress. Mann Williams have been key in knitting the various elements of works into one project with sections of the building at different stages of design and construction. The Enabling works are complete and the main contract is due to commence in early October with a completion in 2021.For a view of the Enabling and basement construction visit https://www.mannwilliams.co.uk/news/view-from-site-2-university-of-bath-school-of-management

About the speaker:

Spencer is a Director at Mann Williams Consulting Engineers based in Bath and a graduate from the University of Bath (1997).

Over the last 10 years he has worked in the region on a diverse range of projects at The University of Bath, Bath Spa University, University of the West of England and the Gainsborough Hotel. These have ranged from the directional drilling into the Hetling hot spring and re-working of the existing site at the Gainsborough hotel, to a new gravity return bobsleigh track and ‘Design for Manufacture and Assembly’ student residencies at the University of Bath, and the new Bristol Business school at UWE.

Spencer prides himself on both his team collaboration and his work as a generalist. He takes a ‘total engineering’ approach to his projects through all elements of design from enabling, temporary and permanent works.
