Creating Opportunities and Overcoming Obstacles - In this presentation Colleen will be sharing her inspirational journey as a mother of a child with special needs. Colleen understands all to well the challenges parents face and has had to overcome many obstacles along the way. Colleen wanted to do the best she could for her child, and in the process, she has also done her best for many other children over the years. This presentation is NOT to be missed!
About Colleen Horswell - Colleen has been involved in Early Childhood Development for more than 29 years and has been part of the evolving ECD landscape noting that not much has been done in terms of regulating the ECD sector and bringing about professionalism. She is an accredited Assessor, Facilitator and Moderator.
A self-motivated determined, confident and not afraid of a challenge person. Whatever she set her mind to do she does to the best of her ability. A leader and able to work on her own. Using her initiative in situations that require immediate decisions and accept the responsibility for whatever the outcomes is. She is able to work under pressure and have the ability to also beyond what is expected of her.
Elected chairperson of the Western Cape Early Childhood Development Forum as well as serving on the Mitchells Plain Education Forum - an initiative of Minister Trevor Manuel and Marius Fransman. Currently also involved at local provincial and national level of government attending workshops on development policies around ECD.
Very passionate about the ECD field and believe that every child in our country should be in an effective best practice quality ECD centre with the best practice ECD practioners. A very strong believer in inclusive education for special needs learners. She brings to the facilitation process strong inclusive strategies and a mother of two young men who are defined as special needs as well as an involvement with Inclusive Education Western Cape.
In terms of facilitating she does intervention strategies with learners who struggle around concepts even if it means working after hours to achieve competency. Colleen also runs her own business as well as an accredited ECD site in Strandfontein. She enjoys crafts, the outdoors, baking, reading and do a bit of belly dancing as well.
