Event description

Description

For a very long time, it was believed that Scotland had little or no involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. Scotland's pre-eminent historian, Professor Sir Tom Devine discusses recent research, which also considers why the harsh truth of the Scottish role in slavery has been lost to history until the last few years. Charing this event is Kevin McKenna, one of Scotland’s best known and most read journalists.

This event includes a drinks reception and book signing opportunity.

Doors at 7pm and talk begins at 7.30pm prompt.

Speaker: Professor Sir Tom Devine is Sir William Fraser Professor Emeritus of Scottish History and Palaeography in the University of Edinburgh, having also taught during his career at the universities of Aberdeen and Strathclyde. Professor Devine has written and edited 37 books to date and was knighted in 2014 by HM The Queen ' for services to the study of Scottish history', the first ever scholar to be so-honoured for that reason.' The Times noted in 2013 that 'Tom Devine is as close to a national bard as Scotland has'.

Chair: Kevin McKenna is one of Scotland’s best known and most read journalists. Currently he writes a weekly column for both the Observer and The Herald and contributes regularly to other print and broadcast media outlets. He is a former Deputy Editor of The Herald and Executive Editor of the Daily Mail in Scotland.
