ITI London Regional Group Summer Guided Walk
The Historic Pubs of Wimbledon Village and Common
Time: 11 for 11.30am, ending with lunch (optional) at 1-1.30pm
With our usual guide, Roger Bone, LRG members, family and friends have the opportunity to explore this historic and beautiful part of London.
Starting at the Rose and Crown Inn in Wimbledon Village ( 93 bus from Wimbledon Station stops outside the Inn ) the walk will feature some of the most interesting stories of Wimbledon Village and Common centred on its famous historic pubs. The walk will be a circular one taking in the Village and the top of the Common starting and ending at the Rose and Crown Inn, where participants can stay for lunch (optional).
Pubs visited will include the Rose and Crown, Wimbledon’s oldest surviving pub dating from the 1650s , the Hand in Hand on the Common, a gem of a Victorian pub – formerly a grocer’s and bake shop from the 1860s , the Fox and Grapes where Wimbledon’s famous 1988 FA Cup Final victory over Liverpool was celebrated by the Wimbledon players and back to the Rose and Crown Inn.
Stories will include the famous duels fought on the Common, one of which involved the Prime Minister William Pitt in 1798! and also the fascinating events surrounding Eagle and Cannizarro Houses and the first preservation of Common land in England in 1871.
