Course Outline

Medical interpreting is one of the most challenging domains we work in — not just because of the terminology, but because of the unpredictable nature of the setting, the emotional and ethical weight of the content, and the need to make confident, well-informed decisions in real time.

This half-day workshop doesn’t cover medical vocabulary or human anatomy. Instead, it focuses on the practical realities of medical interpreting: what you need to know before you say yes, how to prepare when agencies provide little to no information, and how to protect yourself and the Deaf person when situations don’t go to plan.

Whether you're newly qualified or experienced but looking to build confidence in this area, the session offers space to reflect, share strategies, and prepare for the challenges medical settings can bring.

Through discussion, case studies, and practical activities, participants will explore:

  • How to assess your own readiness for a medical booking
  • What types of CPD and shadowing can build real-world confidence
  • How to prepare when very little information is available
  • What to do if a booking changes unexpectedly (e.g. mental health, safeguarding)
  • How and when to withdraw safely and professionally
  • The importance of debriefing and reflection after the appointment
  • Common pitfalls in medical bookings — and how to avoid them
  • Real-world tips for working in healthcare settings.
