Event description

Description

Join us for this 10-mile walk from Tring Station to Ivinghoe Beacon via the beautiful National Trust run Ashridge Estate, using National Trails (including the Icknield way, The Ridgeway, and the Hertfordshire Way). This exhilarating walk takes us up and down several hills and will involve ascending around 350m during our walk to our high point at the Ivinghoe Beacon at 233m, where we should get excellent views over the Hertfordshire countryside (weather dependent). We return to Tring Station via wonderful woodland trails, which are exceptional whatever the time of year. A great walk to get out of the City, and take in some superb countryside, just 45 minutes from Euston.

Icknield Way

The Icknield Way is an ancient trackway in southern and eastern England that goes from Norfolk to Wiltshire. It follows the chalk escarpment that includes the Berkshire Downs and Chiltern Hills.

It is generally said to be, within Great Britain, one of the oldest roads of which the route can still be traced, being one of the few long-distance trackways to have existed before the Romans occupied the country. However, this has been disputed, and the evidence for its being a prehistoric route has been questioned. The name is Celto-British in derivation, and may be named after the Iceni tribe. They may have established this route to permit trade with other parts of the country from their base in East Anglia. It has also been suggested that the road has older prehistoric origins. The name is also said to have been initially used for the part to the west and south (i.e. south of the River Thames) but now refers usually to the track or traces north of the Thames. From ancient times, at least as early as the Iron Age period (before the Roman invasion of 43 AD) and through Anglo-Saxon times, it stretched from Berkshire through Oxfordshire and crossed the River Thames at Cholsey, near Wallingford.

The Ridgeway

The Ridgeway is a ridgeway or ancient trackway described as Britain's oldest road. The section clearly identified as an ancient trackway extends from Wiltshire along the chalk ridge of the Berkshire Downs to the River Thames at the Goring Gap, part of the Icknield Way which ran, not always on the ridge, from Salisbury Plain to East Anglia. The route was adapted and extended as a National Trail, created in 1972. The Ridgeway National Trail follows the ancient Ridgeway from Overton Hill, near Avebury, to Streatley, then follows footpaths and parts of the ancient Icknield Way through the Chiltern Hills to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire. The National Trail is 87 miles (140 km) long.

Ivinghoe Beacon

Ivinghoe Beacon is a prominent hill and landmark in the Chiltern Hills, standing 233 m (757 ft) above sea level. It is situated close to the village of Ivinghoe in Buckinghamshire, the Ashridge Estate, and the villages of Aldbury and Little Gaddesden in Hertfordshire and is managed and owned by the National Trust. Ivinghoe Beacon is part of the Ivinghoe Hills Site of Special Scientific Interest. It lies between the towns of Dunstable in Bedfordshire, and Berkhamsted and Tring in Hertfordshire. It is the starting point of the Icknield Way to the east, and the Ridgeway long-distance path to the west.Ivinghoe Beacon is a popular spot for walkers, sightseers, and model aircraft enthusiasts, who use lift generated by the wind blowing up the hill – a technique known as slope soaring.Ivinghoe Beacon's appearance of remoteness, yet relative proximity to the film studios at Elstree, meant that it was a favoured location for many dramas, especially those produced by ITC in the 1960s.The beacon has a memorial on top of it.

Meeting point and time:

We will meet at 08:45 am at the London Euston near the information point

We will make our way to the platform at 08:55 am. If you are late I'm afraid we will not be able to wait and you will be missing the trip. Of course if you want, you can try to catch up with us at the platform, but the host will be making sure the group gets on the right train, so you will have to figure out the way. Also, you will have to find another way of getting in as I will have your train ticket.

Train*: We will aim to take the 09:05 am train from London Euston, arriving in Tring at 09:49 am.

*Please note that as the rail network is very unreliable, those details might change depending on the train delays and we may take an earlier or later train. The decision might need to be taken by the leader on the spot to suit the group's needs. If you do not arrive at the meeting time, we can not guarantee that you will be able to catch up with the group as the leader may not be able to update you about any changes - even if you call or message them, as sometimes the phone network might not be available and often they might be busy taking care of the group. Leader's priority will always have to be the customers that arrived on time. We add the train details in order to help you out if you have problems getting to the meeting point on time, but take no responsibility for any changes - so the only way to ensure you do not miss out on the event is to arrive on time at the meeting point.

Please make sure that you are dressed appropriately to the weather. We will not cancel the trip unless the conditions make it dangerous for us to make the walk. If the trip was cancelled you would of course be refunded.

It is very difficult to predict exact return time as it depends on the walking speed of the particular group and the choices we make along the way (lunch, route etc). If you decide to join, please consider yourself committed for the day.

FAQs

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

If you have any doubts, queries or would like to chat to anyone about the best options for you, please contact us via email on admin@curiouskatsadventures.com or phone: 0749 642 82 37. Our lines are open Monday to Friday 10 am - 6 pm and we will get back to you within 3 working days. Please note that messages sent through any other channels may not be picked up.

What's the refund policy?

As you know the group operates a no refund policy due to most of the costs having to be paid in advance. However we understand that sometimes things come up and there is nothing you can do, you just have to cancel.

In this case we would be happy to allow you to sell your place to one of your friends. No direct swaps will be accepted though, so your friend needs to buy the place directly from us and only then we will process a refund to you. No one will be admitted on the trip, unless they pay directly to us.

To make sure we know that the swap will be taking place please email us before your friend signs up and let us know their name and when they will be making the payment. Please include the information about the trip as with over 60 upcoming events and almost 8,000 members we are getting hundreds of emails per day, so we need the correct information to identify it.

Please note that if you forget to let us know before your friend signs up, the swap will be invalid and will be treated as any other sale. Once the payment is done by them, please email us the details of original transaction (so that it can be found in the bank account/paypal account) and where should we be sending refund to.

Admin fee of 10% (minimum £3.50) applies to all refunds. Paypal fees are non refundable. The refund will be processed within 5 working days of the trip the latest.
