Event Details

The fourth annual IWA Cardiff Media Summit entitled "Are you being served? Delivering to Wales’ diverse audiences in a global media landscape" is being held on 15th March 2018 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cardiff.

Audience habits are changing rapidly, and Wales’ media needs to keep pace. From the ongoing growth and spread of digital content and platforms to the shifting nature of news in an increasingly complex political landscape, how can we ensure that Wales’ diverse audiences are well served in an increasingly global media market?

How can the Welsh media shape the opportunities that this change offers us? What is already happening in Wales and beyond that can offer us inspiration to meet the challenges ahead?

The draft agenda is as follows:

0900 - 1000     Registration and networking

1000 - 1005      Introduction to event: Auriol Miller, Director, IWA

1005 - 1020      Setting the scene - a preface to the day’s discussions

This session will look at the key themes for the day, namely the role of media in democracy, and how to deliver to the Welsh audience in a global setting. What have our politicians already done in these areas, and what plans do they have in the pipeline?

1020 - 1120      Keynote session - Digital Democracy

How do social media platforms seek to serve diverse local and national audiences within their global market? What are their priorities in this area, how does this relate specifically to Wales, and can Wales push out back into an ever-changing world of social media platforms?

1120 - 1150      Break

1150 - 1250      How to deliver a digital democracy for Wales

An interactive panel task session that will work with panellists to create a digital democracy roadmap for Wales.

1250 - 1320      Showcasing Welsh talent - using innovation to reach and engage diverse audiences.

1320 - 1420     Lunch

1420 - 1520     Representing and engaging Wales - diversity and data

This session will look at diversity and representation in the media in Wales; how we increase them both on screen and behind the camera and break down the barriers to ‘unconscious bias’. It will also look at what we know about audience needs in Wales, what difference could data make to the Welsh audience, and could global content and providers negate Welsh content?

1520 - 1600      Wales and the World: Professor Ruth McElroy, Professor of Creative Industries, USW

This session will look at recipes for success that we can learn from other small nations, and how much influence policy and legislation has on this success. It will also be an opportunity to understand the influence of Welsh successes on other parts of the world.

1600                  Summary and thank you from IWA Media Policy Group Chair
