“Is there a role for prisons in modern Wales?”

in partnership with Cardiff University

Thursday 13th February 2020 | 1730 - 2030

Eversheds-Sutherland| Callaghan Square| Cardiff

The 2019 Thomas Commission recommends that “justice should be determined and delivered in Wales so that it aligns with its distinct and developing social, health and education policy and services and the growing body of Welsh law. Policy would be developed and funding allocated to meet the needs of and provide greater benefit for the people of Wales.”

Welsh prisons are stretched to capacity, reoffending rates are on the rise, and there is no provision at all for Welsh female prisoners. Could Wales abolish prisons altogether and create a new justice system based around the principles of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act?

Dr Robert Jones, Research Associate, School of Law and Politics, Cardiff University is confirmed as the first panellist of this event, and further speakers will be confirmed shortly.

The Cardiff University – IWA debate series brings together researchers, policymakers and practitioners to discuss topical issues at the heart of politics, society and the economy in Wales. Challenging assumptions and offering fresh thinking, the sessions support informed policymaking through constructive and engaging debate.

Tickets for this event are free but limited. To confirm your attendance, please make sure to book your ticket.
