Jacky Tsai: The Harmonious Society
Tue, 18 Oct 2016, 19:00 – Tue, 8 Nov 2016, 22:00 BST
From 18 October - 8 November, The Fine Art Society presents Jacky Tsai's second solo show, The Harmonious Society, a series of 11 new works which take a critical and sometimes ironic look at Chinese identity, engaging with issues such as immigration, gambling, and the perception of cultural differences. In this new body of work Tsai continues to work in his iconic pop art aesthetic, blending contemporary western artistic tropes with the ancient Chinese artistry.
All of works are handcrafted using a 3000 year old Chinese technique known as lacquer carving in which a wood panel is engraved by hand and then coated in several layers of natural lacquer. Lacquer carving was once a booming economy in China but is slowly being replaced as artists move towards faster and more economic methods of art production.
