Event description

Description

A creative workshop Create your own digital punch card pattern of a plant design and use it to make a simple knitted item.

Jaquard is a simple digital process where a visual motif can be applied to a punch card that the knitting machine can then read and use to produce a different coloured pattern or texture into the knitted fabric.

Here you can see the interaction between hand craft and digital craft at a very simple, elementary level. After in introduction to the prints in the exhibition by Peter Griffiths you will work with experienced tutor and knitwear design Miriam Griffiths, learn the basics of working with a knitting machine and digitise your image and realising them through the creation of a personal item. You should expect to make a small tablet, phone or pencil pouch, you will be invited to display it in the gallery during the exhibition.

Sheffield based knitwear designer/maker Miriam Griffiths will guide you through the process of learning how to create a knitted floral pattern using a knitting machine. This workshop will cover the basic techniques to enable you to create a digital pattern card, setting up, knitting and casting off.

You will create a small patterned item such as a phone, tablet or pencil case. You will be invited to display one of your work in the gallery during the rest of the exhibition.

This is a partly funded activity with a small fee to help with funding and cover material costs.
