Description

Purbanat CIC presents Jahaji

Bangla/English I 75 mins

Jahaji tells the stories of Bangladeshi lascars like Ali, Soidulla, Kanu and Shibani who worked on merchant ships and migrated to UK in 60s and 70s. Hard-working Soidulla’s story is different to that of the convivial Ali or laid-back Kanu. We also learn the story of Anglo-Indian Hem, who grew up with the intention of moving to the UK, but found she faced similar challenges to others crossing continents. Jahaji examines the struggles, dreams, pain and fantasies of these diverse lives.

Purbanat is an established theatre company in the West Midlands and a home for new plays, performers and creative people. Working with a variety of partners, the group discovers, nurtures and produces drama which tells universal stories. Purbanat specialises in producing both new plays and adaptations of existing international written works, and tours to theatres and community-focused venues throughout the Midlands and beyond.
