Description

Jamaican Intuitives

Christopher Harris, Leonard Daley, Kingsley Thomas, Birth ‘Ras Dizzy’ Livingstone, Evadney Cruickshank

An important branch of contemporary Jamaican art which was first acknowledged post-independence. There are no pretty beach scenes, no ‘tourist’ art. It is undiluted and powerful. All artists were born and (have) spent their lives in Jamaica.

This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see a unique Jamaican branch of contemporary art which was first acknowledged post-independence and which continues to flourish. There are not pretty beach scenes; no 'tourist' art. The work is challenging and powerful. All five artists in this show were born and (have) spent their lives in Jamaica. Their work has been part of major exhibitions at the National Gallery of Jamaica, and has been shown across the Caribbean, the US and Europe.

Exhibition: 13 October - 26 October

Opening celebrations on Sunday 15 October, 2pm - 5 pm in the presence of His Excellency Seth George Ramocan, High Commissioner for Jamaica. Featuring the Koromanti Mento Band, Mento is Jamaica’s folk music and the precursor to ska and reggae. This event is part of the official Jamaica55 Celebrations.
